Painters in Glebe

Common questions in Glebe
Should the sandstone base of my house be painted?
Usually not, and if it already has been, the question becomes what to do next rather than what would have been ideal. Stone needs to let moisture out, and a film-forming coat over it traps that moisture and pushes it into the wall above. Where a base is already coated we will tell you honestly what removing it involves versus living with it, rather than quietly putting another coat on top.
There is damp at the bottom of the wall. Can you just paint over it?
We can, and it will come back — usually within a year, often looking worse. Paint is not a damp treatment. What we will do is tell you what we can see, paint the parts of the house that are sound, and be straight that the damp section needs the cause dealt with first. That is sometimes a job for someone other than a painter, and we will say so.
My house is one of a matching row. Does that limit the colour?
It does not legally bind you unless council conditions say so, but it is worth thinking about. A uniform row reads as one composition from the street, and a single house breaking hard from it draws the eye for the wrong reason. Plenty of owners here pick a scheme that sits in the family without being identical. We are happy to work through that with you.
