The barge boards and finials are furry with old paint. Can that be saved?
Usually, and it is worth the effort. Built-up paint on decorative timber softens the profile the detail was cut for, so the work is bringing back the edges without carving into the timber underneath. It is slow hand work and it is honestly a real part of the quote — but it is the difference between the front of the house reading crisp and reading tired.
Should the original cedar joinery be painted?
Our advice is almost always no. Original stained cedar is not replaceable and painting it is effectively permanent — stripping it back afterwards rarely gets you what you had. If it looks tired, that is usually a finish problem rather than a paint problem. We would rather build the room's scheme around the timber and be straight with you that we think painting it would be a loss.
What happens to the garden while you are working?
It gets covered and worked around. Established plantings under an elevation are protected before anything starts, gear stands where it is not sitting on a bed, and we clean down at the end of each day rather than at the end of the job. Where a shrub genuinely blocks safe access to a wall, we will raise it with you and let you decide — we will not quietly cut it back.
